It Chapter Two Wants to Make You Laugh in the Face of Death

Taken at face value, It Chapter Two is a strange title for a film because it reads like a declaration. “Hey, look. It chapter two.” You understand that the movie’s a sequel to Andy Muschietti’s It, but the title’s grammatical oddness jumps out when you read it, and it makes you wonder why the studio decided to run with it when “It: Chapter Two” would have worked just fine. Those Batman Rumours Pissed Off Robert Pattinson – Because He’d Been Gunning for the Part for a While

All the back and forth this summer over just who would actually be replacing Ben Affleck in the Batcowl was enough Hollywood drama to put our heads in a batarang-worthy spin. But for one of the subjects of that back and forth, Robert Pattinson, they were in part frustrating, because he thought he’d lost out on a part he’s been hoping to have for a while. Read More >>

Joker Is Powerful, Confused and Provocative, Just Like the Character

If Joker wasn’t called 'Joker' you’d never know it was a DC movie. Though there are characters with the last name 'Wayne' and it takes place in a city called 'Gotham', there’s little else that distinguishes Todd Phillips’ latest film as a comic book movie. It’s a solid, well-made film that, ultimately, has a bit of an identity crisis. Read More >>

YouTube Bans Anti-Nazi Documentary From 1938 For Violating Hate Speech Policy

“Inside Nazi Germany” is one of the most important anti-Nazi documentaries in history. First released on January 20, 1938, the 15-minute movie became one of the first explicitly anti-Nazi newsreels to play in U.S. cinemas and provided an early glimpse into the Nazi atrocities that would only become fully known to Americans years later. The film, part of the legendary “March of Time” newsreel series, was even chosen for preservation by the Library of Congress in 1993 because it played such an important part in U.S. history. But YouTube recently deleted my upload of the video because the company says it’s in violation of their hate speech policy. Seriously. Read More >>

Visual effects are starting to take on a life of their own, by digitally recreating other people’s pasts. When Fandom Is the Problem

“Fandom” – the participatory community that grows out of a piece of media – has come to dominate pop culture. Fandom is not simply being a fan of something. Fandom is performing being a fan by creating transformative works, collecting knowledge, cosplaying, attending conventions, and, ever-increasingly, being vocal online. Some of this has been really great for people seeking communities they can’t find in real life, empowering them to be part of something that means a lot to them. And some of it has empowered only the worst elements of fan culture. Read More >>
